Opened in 1972, the Royal Johor Country Club was the first golf club in the state. Originally just plain Johor Golf Club, in 1983 Royal status was bestowed on the club by the Sultan, and the club was entitled to use the the "Royal" prefix. In 1991 / 92 the course was upgraded - the greens and the tees were rebuilt using Bermuda grass & new ponds and bunkers were incorporated to make the course more challenging.
This is a walking course and no buggies are available. An excellent layout with good segregation between adjacent fairways provided by matured trees and open spaces. Much of the original jungle has been retained, creating a naturally scenic course. Spread over undulating terrain, the course provides a mental as well as a golfing challenge. Royal Johor is one of Malaysia's big courses and favours long hitters. It features generous fairways on most holes.

The second nine is longer and possibly more difficult. Among the many interesting holes on this course are the fifth, eighth, twelfth, sixteenth and eighteenth. The round ends with a 413 metres uphill par 4, which is hard to reach in regulation. The course is usually in excellent condition.
